Colorado became a state on Aug. 1, 1876. It was the 38th state to join the union. The word Colorado has a Spanish origin, meaning "colored red." Colorado has been nicknamed the Centennial State as it became a state in 1876, 100 years after the signing of the nation's Declaration of Independence.
